DENTON — The North Texas women’s soccer team is on the road for the first time this season as they have a date with Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

The Mean Green (3-0-0) hit the road after opening the 2022 season with three straight home victories. UNT beat Abilene Christian, Oral Roberts and Houston Baptist by a combined score of 13-2. UNT enters Sunday’s contest as the nation’s No. 5 scoring team, averaging 4.5 goals per match. They lead the nation in shots per contest at 27.0.
Sunday will be the 11th all-time meeting between UNT and SFA. The Mean Green have won nine of the 10 previous matchup but this will be just the fourth time in the last 20 years the two schools have met. North Texas beat the Ladyjacks 3-0 last season in Denton. Returners Olivia Klein, Taylor Tufts and Allie Byrd all scored in last season’s victory.
North Texas is coming off of a 4-1 home victory over Houston Baptist on Friday. Four different Mean Green players scored in the three-goal victory including Klein who has scored in each of the Mean Green’s first three matches. It is the first time in her now five-year career where she has scored in three consecutive matches.
SFA (1-1-1) on Friday picked up its first win of the season. They beat Prairie View A&M 3-0 on the road. The Ladyjacks tied Louisiana 2-2 on Aug. 21 and fell 5-0 at LSU to open the season. Sunday will be their 2022 home opener. They lost just once last year at home and are currently on a six-match home winning streak.
CONFERENCE USA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
North Texas freshmen Kat Burnell (Offensive Player of the Week) and Dani Jacobson (Goalkeeper of the Week) were named players of the week on Aug. 23 after Burnell scored a hat trick, had the most shots on goal in the league and Jacobson led UNT to two victories and had a shutout versus Oral Roberts.

Last Sunday’s 4-0 win over Oral Roberts was head coachJohn Hedlund’s 375th career victory. He is the 20th NCAA women’s soccer head coach to reach 375 victories. He is only the seventh to do it all at one university. Hedlund’s 375 career wins are the 12th most by an active NCAA women’s soccer head coach.

Fifth-year senior Olivia Klein has scored in three straight matches. The last UNT women’s soccer player to score in four straight matches was Rachel Holden in 2015.
