WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The Jarvis Christian University volleyball team defeated Williams Baptist, 3-2 and Crowley’s Ridge, 3-2 in a Saturday doubleheader in Arkansas.
The Bulldogs move to 5-2 on the season with wins in their last four matches.
GAME 1: JCU took the first set, 25-20 before Williams Baptist came back to capture the second and third sets. The Bulldogs took the fourth set in a close 25-23 win, then closed out the match by taking a 15-9 win in fifth set. The Bulldogs scored five of the last six points in the fifth set to pull away and secure the victory.
Asiah West had a game high 19 kills in the contest to go along with eight digs. Jai Johnson followed with 11 kills in the match and three digs. As a team, the Bulldogs totaled 50 kills in the match.
Kaia Brooks had a team high 11 digs. Chloe Buchanan and Johnice Hubbard each registered 10 kills as the team totaled 68 digs through five sets.
GAME 2: The Bulldogs came out hot as they took the first set, 25-14. Crowley’s Ridge responded with a narrow second set win, 25-23. JCU then took the third set, 25-20 before Crowley’s Ridge answered again by winning the fourth set, 25-20.
West had another impressive performance in the second match of the day as she again recorded a game high 20 kills against the Pioneers. She also had three digs in the effort. Johnson was also impressive in the second match as she totaled 18 kills and six digs.
Brooks continued her strong performance as she registered a game high 21 digs against the Pioneers. Amariah Kendrick and Alyzeh Vakameilalo each had 12 digs as the team totaled 81 digs in the contest.
The Bulldogs are set to host their first home match of the season Friday at 7 p.m. as they open conference play against Southwest.
SoccerWOMEN
HAWKINS — Mitzy Guereca booted in three of the team’s nine goals Saturday afternoon as the Jarvis Christian women’s soccer team defeated Dallas Christian, 9-0 at the Jarvis Soccer Stadium.
Gabriela Benavides started the high score affair early with a goal in the 15th minute on an assist by Kayla Ochoa. The goal marked Benavides’ fourth of the season.
Guereca and Ochoa responded with goals over the next two minutes as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Guereca scored in the 16th minute on an assist by Veronica Gutierrez. Ochoa followed in the 17th minute on an assist by Benavides.
Adrea Mata and Evelyn Lopez wrapped up the first half with two more goals to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 advantage heading into the break. Mata scored her first goal of the season in the 26th minute as she was assisted by Guereca. Lopez followed in the 33rd minute to secure her first goal of the season on another assist by Guereca.
The Bulldogs came out hot again to start the second half. Guereca scored her second goal of the day in the 48th minute on an assist by Yozary Gonzalez to extend the Bulldog lead to 6-0.
Mitzy’s sister, Leslie Guereca got in on the action as she kicked in her first goal of the year in the 59th minute. Brisa Ibarra came through with the assist.
Mitzy scored her third goal of the afternoon in the 84th minute as Elvira Torres helped with the assist. Mata followed with her second goal of the day in the 88th minute to seal the 9-0 win.
Goalkeeper Hailey Rivera picked up one save in the win.
The Bulldogs are back home Tuesday afternoon for a 1 p.m. matchup with Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
MEN
HAWKINS — Juan Rodriguez, Kyang Dieu Merci, Yuneum Rios, and Julian Gomez all scored their first goals of the season as the Bulldogs rolled to a 5-1 win against Dallas Christian College on Saturday afternoon at the Jarvis Soccer Stadium.
Rodriguez started the scoring early as he booted in a goal in the fourth minute on an assist from Dieu Merci.
The rest of the first half was quiet, but Dieu Merci scored a goal of his own in the 50th minute to start the second half and give the Bulldogs the 2-0 advantage.
Rios scored in the 67th minute on an assist from Kevin Ochoa as the Bulldogs extended the lead to 3-0.
Dallas Christian answered with one goal from Jeremy Callejias to cut the lead down to 3-1 in the 80th minute. Minutes later in the 85th minute, an own goal by Dallas Christian gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. Gomez would score the final goal of the afternoon in the 86th minute to seal the 5-1 win for the Bulldogs.
Goalkeeper Avramov Vladimir allowed one goal and registered two saves.
The Bulldogs return to their home field Saturday when they host North American for a 3:30 p.m. game.
