The Final of ATP Finals in Turin will change time due to FIFA World Cup 2022. Tennis and soccer cross again and the former is forced to give way to the latter. All because of the World Cup. Usually, this event and the great tennis events meet in late summer.
After the Roland Garros, the scepter is handed over to Wimbledon, which usually takes place between the end of June and the beginning of July. So it is the Grand Slam tournament that clashes with the most important tournament for nations in the soccer world.
This year, however, things have changed: having chosen Qatar as the venue, the World Cup moved to the end of the year, starting on 20 November. On the same day as the opening match, that is the match between the hosts of Qatar and Ecuador, the final of the singles of the ATP Finals, staged in Turin, is also scheduled.
Not only the same date, but also the same time: both events started, according to the program, at 17:00 local time. In the end it was the tennis tournament that gave way: as indicated by a press release from the ATP, the singles final will be postponed to 19:00.
A postponement for the final match of the last tournament of the season, which therefore does not risk going together with the first match of the World Cup, which remains stationary at 17:00 localtime. As well as the time of the doubles final, which will start at 16:00 Italian time, remains unchanged.
The protagonists of the Finals
At present, there are five players qualified for the Finals tournament. Present the world number one and new Slam champion, Carlos Alcaraz. He will not be the only Spaniard in Turin: Rafael Nadal is also back, intending to conquer for the first time a tournament that has always eluded him.
The one who knows about Finals instead is Novak Djokovic: with the victory of the Tel Aviv and Astana tournaments, he has obtained the necessary points to remain in the Top 20 of the Race and return to Turin. Casper Ruud closes the speech in Turin for now, thanks to his two Grand Slam finals, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, another winner of the tournament in 2019.
The other contenders, on the other hand, will have to compete in Basel or Vienna and in Paris to get the last three places available.
