If you had to sum up Friday night’s incredible Game 1 of the World Series between the Astros and Phillies in one screen shot, you might just go with the reaction of one young Phillies fan in the stands at Minute Maid Park right after J.T. Realmuto launched a go-ahead homer in the top of the 10th inning of Philadelphia’s dramatic 6-5 win.
The young boy, wearing a Phillies jersey that was unbuttoned to show the giant “P” logo on his chest, turned to a man wearing an Astros cap as if to say, “Did you see that?! My guys just took the lead!”
The joy in the boy’s face, to the chagrin of the Astros fan, embodied the sheer surprise at what was transpiring — the underdog Phillies were three outs away from taking a 1-0 World Series lead on the road against the Astros, who hadn’t lost a single game this postseason.
There’s a long way to go in this year’s World Series, but Game 1 certainly put the “Classic” in Fall Classic, and for Phillies fans like that youngster, it was a night they’ll never forget.
