Welcome to the new official home of NBA.com in Canada!
The Sporting News is honoured to partner with the NBA as it celebrates its 75th season and continues to gain steam as one of the most popular sports leagues on the planet.
As the NBA pays homage to its rich history throughout the season, it’s worth a reminder that the first game in the history of the NBA – then known as the Basketball Association of America – didn’t take place in the United States, but rather Canada. On November 1, 1946, the New York Knickerbockers defeated the Toronto Huskies 68-66 in front of 7,090 fans at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.
From the first game in league history to the 2019 champion Toronto Raptors and now with more NBA players than any other country outside of the U.S., it’s impossible to downplay Canada’s ever-expanding role in the NBA’s evolution. As such, The Sporting News is thrilled to serve up unparalleled, comprehensive coverage for NBA fans in Canada that can’t be found anywhere else.
Fans who come to NBA.com in Canada will experience league-wide coverage tailor made to suit the Canadian audience beyond exploring the most important names, games and stories relevant to any NBA fan. Here’s what that looks like in 2022:
Breaking down every Raptors game and storyline before the tip and after the final buzzer from all angles with timely news, expert analysis, and full highlights.
Providing insightful commentary on Canadian stars past and present, on and off the court from Jamal Murray to Andrew Wiggins to Steve Nash.
Amplifying authentic and authoritative Canadian voices from all corners of the basketball community including the WNBA, national team, G-League and more.
Offering full scores and stats in real-time to keep you connected to all of the action.
Poring through betting lines, over-unders and prop bets with an eye towards gaining an edge and getting in on the action.
Unearthing vintage NBA stories from the past that taps into The Sporting News legacy that includes original perspective dating back to 1886, five years before Dr. James Naismith invented basketball.
The Sporting News also has its origins in the U.S., but we, too, have grown internationally. So it’s fitting – and we’re extremely proud – to partner with the NBA, as sportingnews.com becomes the official digital home of the NBA not just in Canada but in Australia, Japan, Spain, India, Argentina and Mexico with additional countries (and languages) in the near future.
The Sporting News legacy stretches back further than any other North American sports brand and we’re excited to tell basketball stories that celebrate the past, magnify the present and illuminate Canada’s bright future as a certifiable hoops hotbed.
