SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After collecting wins in both singles and doubles to help the Cal Poly women’s tennis defeat Sacramento State 4-0 in its home opener, redshirt junior Kim Bhunu has been named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Bhunu, a Harare, Zimbabwe native, paired with fellow redshirt junior Emily Ackerman at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Hornets’ Tsveti Yotova and Paige Alter 6-1 to help the Mustangs earn the doubles point.
At No. 1 singles, Bhunu beat Yotova in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to help Cal Poly improve its record to 2-2.
So far this season, Bhunu is 4-2 on the year in doubles and 2-4 in singles.
The Mustangs hit the road this week for a pair of matches. They will face UC San Diego for the first conference match of the season Friday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. That will be followed by a match against San Diego State Saturday, Feb. 12 at noon.
