CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina men’s tennis team will host 13th-ranked South Carolina on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill in a matchup of ranked foes. The rivals will meet at 1 p.m. in the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels (4-1) are ranked No. 23 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, released last week.
Last year, UNC beat the Gamecocks twice. The Tar Heels downed the ‘Cocks, 4-1, in the finals of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Chapel Hill in January then won a 4-3 thriller in Columbia, overcoming a 3-0 deficit to do so.
Simon Soendergaard fought off four match points in the second set with Phillip Jordan serving for the match, coming from behind to win 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, at No. 6 singles to tie the team score at 3-3. Benjamin Sigouin then beat #118 Connor Thompson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, in the clinching match.
