TEEING OFF
• For the first time in nearly one month, the NM State men’s golf team is back on the links. The Aggies head to Laredo, Texas, where they’ll take part in The Border Olympics at the par-72, 7,204-yard course at the Laredo Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
• One of 15 teams competing at The Border Olympics, NM State will be joined in Laredo, Texas, by Abilene Christian, Baylor, Bowling Green, Houston, Houston Baptist, Illinois State, Lamar, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Michigan, Rice, Sam Houston, Texas and UTSA. From a WAC standpoint, it will give the Aggies a chance to see how they stack up with league foes Abilene Christian, Lamar and Sam Houston.
• NM State’s five-man lineup consists of Matthew Jackman (starting on hole four), Alvaro Morales (starting on hole two), Joseph Robson (starting on hole three), Garrison Smith (starting on hole 1B) and Aidan Thomas (starting on hole 1A). That group tees off at 7:00 a.m. MT Monday morning.
• Another Aggie, Tyler Diehl, will be competing as an individual in the 86-man field. Diehl also tees off at 7:00 a.m. MT Monday morning from hole 10A.
• With the exception of the 2019-20 season, NM State has taken part in The Border Olympics each and every year since 2014-15. Last season at the event, Thomas turned in a spectacular third round to help NM State slide into a top-ten finish (10th, 308-296-296=900). Thomas carded a 69 (-3) through the final 18 holes of the event and finished tied for 13th (77-73-69=219) on the individual leaderboard at the conclusion of the event.
• Since 2014-15, the Aggies’ best finish at the event came in 2015 when the squad finished eighth out of 18 competing teams. Through the two-day tournament, NM State penciled in scores of 288-286-296=870 (+6) to solidify its strong showing.
• In their most recent tournament, NM State came up with a seventh-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Monday-Tuesday, Jan. 24-25. The Aggies shot a collective 282-293-284=859 (-5) to finish in a tie for seventh place in the 14-team field. NM State finished tied with 39th-ranked Duke for seventh place while finishing nine strokes better than 30th-ranked San Francisco (868, +4).
• Smith carded a 69 (-3) during the third and final round, pushing him up into a tie or 15th place on the individual leaderboard.
COMING UP NEXT
• NM State won’t be in action again until the early stages of March. The Aggies are set to take a journey to Palm Desert, Calif., where they’ll play in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate hosted by Wyoming. The three-day tournament at Classic Club is set for Wednesday-Friday, March 2-4.
